AUGUSTA, ME – Governor Paul LePage made the following comments on the Janet Mills budget signing today:
“Maine people have suffered for years under the liberal policies of Janet Mills and her election year gimmick won’t fix the long term damage she has caused.
Maine’s economic recovery from the pandemic was the worst in the nation. In 2021, Maine was dead-last, 50th in the nation, in unemployment recovery, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Maine’s annual unemployment rate went from 5.4% in 2020 to 4.6% in 2021 …but that was the smallest statistical improvement among all 50 states. Our closest neighbor, New Hampshire saw a 91% improvement.
To be competitive we need a permanent cutin Maine’s income tax, not just a one-time payment.
Why can’t we allow the Maine people to enjoy savings every year, year-in and year-out, rather than a one-time payment funded from Washington?”
